UNIVERSITY: COMPUTER SCIENCE MAJOR

OVERVIEW

The Computer Science major falls under the Computer Science and Information Technology group. The objective of the Computer Science program is to train high-quality engineers with the ability to design, build, and deploy software systems that meet both domestic and international needs. Graduates of the Computer Science major are also equipped with the necessary knowledge to pursue postgraduate and doctoral studies in the field of Computer Science and Information Technology.

The program will provide students with foundational knowledge in the field of Computer Science and Information Technology, core knowledge of the Computer Science major, and in-depth knowledge and technologies in the field, such as artificial intelligence, computer security and safety, processing large-scale data from the Internet and social networks, designing and developing applications for mobile devices and the web environment.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

To train engineers with political qualities, ethics, a sense of community service, knowledge, and professional skills commensurate with their level of education, health, and the ability to meet the requirements of building and defending the homeland. The specific objectives are as follows:

  1. Have good ethics to work and contribute to the community.
  2. Have the ability to implement information systems, knowledge systems, and software systems that meet the needs of the socio-economic sector.
  3. Have sufficient knowledge to pursue postgraduate studies or self-improvement to enhance knowledge and professional skills in the competitive domestic and international environment.
  4. Have the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

The program objectives are reflected through the following general program outcomes:

  1. Analyze complex computational problems to apply principles of Computer Science and relevant rules to determine solutions.
  2. Design, implement, and evaluate a computer science solution to meet the computer science discipline's requirements outlined in the program's disciplinary text.
  3. Communicate effectively in various professional environments.
  4. Recognize professional responsibilities and provide assessments of practical computing based on legal and ethical principles.
  5. Function effectively as a member or leader of a team participating in activities appropriate to the program's rules.
  6. Apply computer science theory and fundamental principles of software development to produce solutions.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Since 2008, the University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City has been developing two Computer Science and Computer Engineering programs according to ABET standards. ABET is a standard for engineering and technology programs widely applied in U.S. universities. Since 2014, both the Computer Science and Computer Engineering programs have been officially accredited by ABET. Until now, these are the first and only programs in Vietnam accredited by ABET. Through the process of developing programs according to ABET standards, the quality of both the Computer Science and Computer Engineering programs has been elevated to international standards. Graduates from these ABET-accredited programs will be widely recognized by companies and organizations in the United States.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

In addition to acquiring specialized knowledge during classroom hours, students of the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering actively participate in scientific research activities with the teaching staff. Many students have contributed to scientific papers presented at conferences and reputable international scientific journals while still enrolled in the undergraduate program. Some of the products they have contributed to building have practical significance, such as the traffic information system for Ho Chi Minh City (http://traffic.hcmut.edu.vn), Applications include guiding pedestrians through urban areas to avoid congested traffic points on Android (Road Maester app on Google Play), vehicle detection and counting in urban areas through traffic cameras, environmental monitoring systems in industrial zones, autonomous vehicle control applications, underwater robot control systems, large-scale data storage systems, and more.

STUDENT EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering regularly organizes professional activities and career-oriented events to provide students with opportunities to prepare the knowledge and skills necessary for their future careers. This dynamic approach enhances the students' learning environment and makes it more engaging. Annual events include Job Fair, Engineering Day, and specialized competitions such as Pascal's Descendants, CSE Hackathon. There are also seminars on new technologies and professional skills with the participation of the business community in Ho Chi Minh City. In addition, students actively participate in social and professional activities within the university, such as joining the Green Summer Campaign, Spring Volunteer activities, etc.
